Playground Construction in Romania

Flame Trust’s Playground Construction Programme commenced in 2020, when a new outdoor facility was built in Sighet, a city in Northern Romania in the grounds of a home, caring for the needs of children and young adults with learning impairment. 

Calin Rezmuves (left), one of our employees, spent the first 19 years of his life in an orphanage in this area, and even though it was a very uncomfortable and challenging experience, he wanted to give something back to his home country. Flame’s programme for providing play therapy facilities was subsequently launched, bringing life and enrichment to impoverished communities.

Flame has now built six playgrounds, partnering with Habitat for Humanity to provide the construction expertise and the manual labour, under the direction of Calin, who oversees the projects. The most recent installation provided an all-weather play surface for young people in the town of Brusturoasa, alongside the children’s playground that Flame previously built which already provides a focus and meeting points for members of the community.

This initiative is supported primarily by Flame friends and partners, and of late, we have also received some gifts from the estates of some of our supporters - a wonderful endorsement of the trust and success of the playground provision, and the confidence that the Flame family has in our work and ministry. This has been marked by memorial benches adjacent to the playgrounds that benefitted from this thoughtfulness and kindness.

Steered by Calin, with executive direction by Flame’s CEO Dave Pope (right), the projects have enriched the lives of children and parents alike, and have made a profound statement about why we do what we do. 

The Christian ethos is embedded in each initiative, and all projects have been delivered efficiently according to appropriate specification and on budget.

On completion of the project in Brusturoasa, the Mayor wrote:

‘Your support has helped create a space where children and young people can play, take part in sports and spend time together. Beyond the facilities themselves, we deeply appreciate your care for people, the time you have given and your determination to turn community needs into tangible results. Please convey our gratitude to all members and supporters of Flame Trust’.
